the site it self is a very cool Idea. You pulled it off. BUT the forum is a diffrent story.
your useing phpbb for one wich I am not very happy about but you seemed to mod it so it looks good and runs good with your system so I could care less. What ever works for you I guys.
The thing that makes me kinda iffey is that there are only like 3 people post on the board. Will and that other guy. You should try focus more on the forum a little. I think this should be a big part of the site.
I would also like to see a quick reply box like in VB not that I am comparing you to it or anything it just makes life a whole lot easer to not have to go to a diffrent page to make a post. I am not shore that PHPBB has this mod or hack what ever you want to call it. I will look arond but I am shore you guys can come up with something with your supper PHP skills.
beside that everything is awsome. The look of the site is very clean and cool It is easy on the eyes. The little bits of color are a nice tuch and the thing that makes it even cooler is that the colors mean something. It is also very user friendly it is not hard to navigate and understand. I love this site and I want to see it grow into something very cool I am just sugjesting things I hope you take them into mind. '
Sorry about my spelling and all that I do not have time to check it right now I am late for a meeting as it is.
hi xanix - thanks for you comments and glad you like the site.
i agree that the forum is central to the os and chris and i have been posting hard to try and get a momentum going ... which i think is starting. adding the quick reply is a nice idea, i'll look into it.
just so you know, we're also developing a standalone messenger/email alert app with a built in chromo which will hopefully get more of the protein people talking!
cheers, will.
hi xanix - quickreply now added.
will.
OK, front page is a little overwhelming, couple of thoughts tho, could do with making the member login and google box part of the furniture around the edges of the main portal bit, would help the portal sections look uniform.
hi aj,
nice idea. just updated the "furniture".
lmk what you think, will.
yarr, that be anice donkey...
i mean, yes, looks good, makes the main page look a bit tidier...
love the guide on the right. esp as proteinos is my homepage, its very good. however, if i could see which sites have been updated since i last visited them that would be brill, i always click through to them so always have the guide on all windows.
hi ed,
thanks for your ideas. yeah, would be nice to have the guide running throughout the whole os and some kind of new/updated icon ...
i'll look into it.
Hi Will,
Any chance of RSS feeds?
hi intradink,
rss feed is here:
http://feed.proteinos.com/index.xml
lmk how you get on, will.
I'm still exploring the Protein Main Frame - really enjoying it.
When I've finished mooching round the site I'll start getting into the forum. I definitely want to know more about Protein!
hi olly,
enjoy, will.
Works a treat. Thanks. Bit of feedback though, your xml is missing a url behind your FEED channel image.
cheers.
are you using it online or in a reader?
should how be ok.
using it online...
take a look at:
http://www.intradink.com/panelnews.asp?id=http%3A%2F%2Ffeed.proteinos.com%2Findex.xml
checked the xml and no link tag defined for the image
others like BBC work fine...
If you click on my signature and then the 'news' link you can see what I mean.
hmm, i think your host: http://rssxpress.ukoln.ac.uk/lite/viewer/ is a little slow as i've just posted a new article in the feed that hasn't showed up yet.
the code looks good, so think it would be good to give it a while.
btw, you faraz of cardiff uni fame?
Yeah i think it caches the pages after the first query.... I'm only playing around with this at the moment.
And as for your question, if you mean that blunt toking, steppin', hop-hop head.... then yes!, but all grow'd up now ;)
I've been monitoring your (excellent) work over the years. I even probably have your first ninfomania feed in an archive somewhere.
ahhh mr faraz!
nice to know you've been keeping an eye on all things protein. you in london or have you moved out to a big house in the country?
nice, will.
Running lil' (dink?) tings in south west london... by that I mean I'm married with a beautiful 20 month old daughter (Aalia), living near Wimbledon... we should hook up some time. I'm doing some interesting stuff in the Digital Music Arena.
.... Anyway shouldn't probably go too much further off topic on this thread ;) ... mail me (I'm on your lists).
nice. will do, will.
Hi
The links column on the right side of the proteinos.com page is gone.I tried to open the page in other computers assuming something might be wrong with my browser, but those links doesn't appear on other PCs too.
Thanks
yeah i removed it yesterday for the main page as it was taking up too much screen space. you can still get to it from the channel pages by clicking on each colour of the chromo logo on the lhs nav.
so, do you want it back on the main index page?
I am sure that it is better like before on the main page.I want it back!
ask and you shall receive ;-)
[hit refresh a couple of times]
... i just need to get the guide chromo enabled now.
do you know where i can find javascript that calls an link from the users internal clock?
okay sir will of protein,
you know i love the site, but i've using firefox for a while now ( for those without macs, it is the only way to go) but protein has always looked a bit ill in said browser.
i get the timeless PHP header started errors in the calendar on the main page, and the ol'chromo is broke too, the DPM theme works, but it remains protein grey. (has the code changed much from the pre-themes version?)
have a look when you get a chance as i can feel my circadian rhythm slipping.
ah, i have a different complaint since you asked... i rarely (like only 3% of the time) get the newest forum links to show up on the mainpage or http://forum.proteinos.com/index.php. I can get it after refreshing a few times by going to http://forum.proteinos.com/
this happens at home and work with IE and Maxthon (firefix just won't load right...)
thanks in advance, and not a big deal
-micah
mr oli, i've had firefox running for the last 6 months and, if it makes you feel any better, have also been suffering from a slipping circadian rhythm :-) to answer you question there is no code changes from the previous versions, i think it is just the fact that firefox is still "finding it's feet" and therefore some of the java and caching elements are not loading correctly.
mr micah, it's interesting to here you say that new forum posts don't show up. what browser/os are you running. on a slightly different tangent, i've only just noticed that is thread was set as a "sticky" and therefore ignored by the "latest posts" app. doh!
for whatever reason, it occurs on different platforms.
here at work i have win2k and browser Maxthon (builds off of IE)
home i connect to the forum on desktop and laptop winXP Pro SP2 with IE and Maxthon, the laptop works the best on pulling up the latest posts, and best with IE. (crap, now i try it on IE at work and it works fine...) i guess it could just be a Maxthon thing. (http://www.maxthon.com)
again, no big deal. the http://forum.proteinos.com/search.php?search_id=newposts always works (but i miss a lot since it seems to cache for 6hrs or so?)
and i don't think maxthon has a big user base, i went to it since firefox always takes 5 minutes to open.
Hi Will
anychance of a lite version of the site?
I understand the adverts are a must, but ive recently switched down to a 56k modem and its s-l-o-w...
hi wdm i'll look into it, but it's quite a big ask :-)
One thing I think the forum DEFENITELY needs is some way for notification WITHIN the ProteinOS with regards to posts in the forum. I have combed through some of the posts I've put up and discovered that people have asked me questions about my posts, and I didn't know it.
I think the email notifications are annoying because it's invasive of my email account; I don't like to think of messages in my email from protien as spam.
I'd like to be able to have some preference settings in my account so that I don't have to uncheck the "Notify me when a reply is posted" check box.
Some way of highlighting unread messages in my inbox would be nice as well.
When responding to messages in the inbox, I like to have the the previous message present so that when I respond after a while, I know what the thread is about. Having a "Sent" folder would be nice as well.
i'll second the non-email-but-OS-based-notifiaction. sounds like a tough mod tho.
Another totally awesome thing would be a chromo square next to everybody's name in the forum indicating the time-zone they are in when they are logged on. That'll help people understand chromo and make people really feel what it's all about. Also, it's cool to get an idea for the different timezones people are in and how big the international draw is.
i dont want to turn into a whooping sidekick, but fuckin A.
um, yeah, those both sound great... but i'm no programmer...
will, if you need backup space for stuff, let me know, or even a fail-safe backup server, we could IP switch it to me if these servers should go down...
first suggestion - if you click on the number in square brackets after FORUM in the top navigation it should bring up all the latest posts since you last logged in ... but it does tend to "drop off" after a while due to a problem with the session cookies. i'll research deeper into the phpbb community [who make the tech the forum runs on] to see if it can be solved.
second suggestion - nice. this was the original idea for the global map on the members directory: http://members.proteinos.com/memberlist.php ... but then i couldn't figure out how do it! maybe someone fluent in flash/director could have a crack at it? also the idea of having a members-chromo-avatar-thingy is nice, but i think will need some more work/thinking to avoid any confussion with the colour icons of the content channels.
forgot to mention that you can turn off forum post nofications in "Edit Profile" settings:
http://members.proteinos.com/profile.php?mode=editprofile
Will, the members directory is EXACTLY where I got the idea from! Your design defenitely conveyed that message.
Have you looked at some sort of standardization design for chromo to separate the chromo concept from its context? You could create an icon that has a chromo space and a small information tag, similar to the RSS icons that are becoming so popular; they are a throw-back to the "Get Netscape" icons of 8 years ago. It was so effective that Microshaft used it for their campaigns. The only remaining icon of this class I can think of are the icons for Acrobat Reader ("Get Acrobat" icon here http://www.adobe.com/ ).
Some examples of the RSS icons are available here:
http://my.yahoo.com/s/about/rss/index.html
I am referring to the icons under the "Open Standards Support" column on the right hand side. People are VERY familiar with the design, and chromo could get more acceptance if it is placed into a container they are already familiar with. It could also show people how versatile the concept is.
As Pablo Picasso said (through Steve Jobs' big mouth), "Good artists copy, great artists steal".
yes. this is all good. we *need* to get the chromo as far and wide as posible.
also, just added some new code to show any new post on forum since your last visit and also extend the cookies session length which should fix the problem. i've also renamed the session cookie, so you may find you need to re-login.
lmk if it works ok for you.
hmmm, the new [ ] on the forum index only seems to recognise new posts that are not yours, while the [ ] in the top nav shows *all* new posts ... that works for me?
Yes, that's cool. What is the criteria for "newness" and how long does a topic stay new? I've noticed that the ordering in the topic threads has reversed showing the earliest post first.
[I hope I haven't opened up a headache for you!]
the criteria is "new since you last visted" i.e. since your last logged in or since your sessions cookie timed out. i've increased the session cookie to it's maximum time [99999 it was only 3200 before] which should mean the notification stays longer enough for you read them.
wrt new post sort order, it can be switched the other way around if required ;-)
... and just added an rss feed for all the forum posts:
http://forum.proteinos.com/rss.php
and a new page dedicated to rss feeds for the feed:
http://feed.proteinos.com/rss.html
nice.
maybe i dragged my feet on this a little, but i just got my live RSS bookmarks working for feed & forum. i am now 23% happier and 41% more productive :)
nice work.
nice. glad to be of service.
i'm exhuming an older suggestion topic , but it would be nice if Icould get a single e-mail that notified of the replies to something like the last 10 posts I made. that would eliminate the problem of having several e-mails if I got 10 replies.
The chromo feature is very cool. But I think people need a way to "get their bearings" in chromo-space. Perhaps some sort of chart showing the chromo spectrum and an arrow, or some sort of distinguishing feature to make people know what part of the chromo spectrum they are in would help key users into a chromo time sequence. In other words, users would be more oriented into chromo.
